The Get Reel Student Film Festival is an annual Fresno County Public Library filmmaking competition for students ages 13-22 made possible by generous support from Educational Employees Credit Union. All films that meet the guidelines are shown in a public viewing, followed by an awards ceremony at the Tower Theatre in Fresno's famous Tower District. Winners from each category earn up to $500 in prizes.

Our Mission: To enrich Fresno's cultural community by encouraging, promoting and recognizing the creativity of young local filmmakers.

How to Save and Format Your Film

You must submit your film on a disk and upload it to YouTube. In order to correctly submit your film while maintaining quality, read the information below.

Explanation
Video data is encoded so that it may be transported over the Internet and/or saved to a disk. Along the way it is often compressed in order to make the file size more transportable. The downside is the more compressed the video is, the less quality is retained, and the more degraded the images usually become. To ensure that your submitted film is of the best quality, follow the instructions below.

Instructions
First off, DO NOT submit a playable DVD (i.e., a DVD with a menu that can be played in a regular DVD player). We need a computer file on a disk (DVD, CD or flash drive). The following file types are acceptable: .avi, mp4, h.264, .dv or .mov. Once saved, open the video file and view your entire film--does it play all the way through? Does it look crystal clear? Is the file .avi, mp4, h.264, .dv or .mov?

if YES to all of the above, submit your film!
if NO, read on:

1) Save your completed film in the file format of your choice.
2) Compress and convert it using these instructions:

Use the Squared 5 software for Mac or PC. It’s a free download you can find here: http://www.squared5.com/

Quick reference guide to settings (from the tutorial):
-file export to mp4
-choose h.264 in top menu
-qual 75%
-check multipass
-check interlaced
-check reinterlace
-sound: default (highest quality)
-size: default
To trim your film, find stopping point, click “O” (for out) and ctrl T (for trim)
